DUOMO SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA
A few days ago during our Puglia trip I was able to discover another beautiful mosaic floor from the 12th century, laid as a life's work by a monk; Pantaleone... in Otranto.
In the cathedral of the southern Italian city of Otranto, the Santa Maria Annunziata, Not much is known about this mosaic artist, but his visual story is wonderful to read...
The mosaic covers the full floor area of the cathedral, with a tree of life in the middle, depicting Biblical stories, interspersed with medieval legends and references to 'ordinary' life. We see Adam and Eve, at the moment they are chased out of paradise, and Noah's Ark, but also Alexander the Great. The twelve months of the year are depicted, and the signs of the Zodiac.
